The memoirs of an author living with depression

Let me take you on a journey - a journey where you can hear my pain (well 'read' my pain anyway, let us not be pedantic but it IS a book and not a self-help CD). Learn about all the techniques I've tried when dealing with my bouts of depression and self-hatred - some techniques actively encouraged by professionals across the world, other techniques (prostitutes, drugs, self-harm) pretty much frowned upon. The spoilsports. What worked for me and what most certainly didn't! Told with the blackest of humour to keep things fun!

Includes illustrations by the author and previously unpublished short stories!

First off, I give kudos to Mr. Shaw for giving us such a raw glimpse into his mind. I know it was very difficult and personal for him to do so, and I am sure at times, more painful than most could imagine.
Thank you kindly, Sir ;)

Now, onto my review:
As the description of the book states, this is not a self help book. What it really is is a memoir- a somewhat brutal, and disturbingly accurate look into the mind of a person with Borderline Personality Disorder, possibly comorbid with BiPolar.

But, what makes it really stand out, is that this is not a book filled with psychiatric jargon. Mr. Shaw has never been properly diagnosed, hospitalized, or is he medicated.

This is truly a book of what it really feels like, and the racing thoughts and moods that goes through ones mind.

It is a book that will ring true for any sufferer of mental illness or loved one of someone who is afflicted for it mirrors the darkest recesses of the mind- it says what the mentally ill have always tried to put in words but were too confused to do so.

It says that you are not alone.
(And, YOU, Mr. Shaw, are not alone, either). Far from it, in fact.

I see more potential earnings for this book if the title and description were tweaked a bit.

The execution of the subject matter was superb.

I did notice that one review mentioned the language. Yes, it was a bit strong in the beginning but how else can someone who is writing a memoir use any other language except what comes naturally to them.

Since the first review describes the book exceptionally well, I do not feel I need to add anything.

I feel very fortunate to have been able to read Mr. Shaw's book - I have suffered from depression myself. Mr. Shaw, thank you, I know I am not alone.
Whether your a Matt Shaw fan or never heard of him; whether you have some sort of mental illness or not; this real life story of Matt Shaw's struggles with depression is a must read. There's so many misconceptions about depression and with the recent loss of Robin Williams, it's being talked about more openly. People want to blame this and that when they don't truly understand what it's like. This biography/memoir takes you inside Matt's head as he takes you from school life to college life, single life to married life, and dead-end jobs to being an author.

I have Asperger's Syndrone (a form of Autism). As I read Matt's experiences in school, I found myself thinking back to times I spent in High School with counselors. While I had nowhere near the amount of struggles Matt had, reading similar problems made this story very real to me.

Also included in this book are four bonus short unpublished stories.
This is not a watered down version of one's life with depression. Matt Shaw takes the reader inside his dark thoughts in a very honest, blunt way. It's not pretty and it's not at all politically correct. But it's real. The blurb states that this is not a self-help book and it's not. It's his journey, and the hard road he had to travel - and is likely still traveling - to be who he is today. He found an outlet with his writing. A lot of authors say that writing is their therapy. Matt Shaw proves that in a big way.

Very rarely am I able to glimpse inside the mind of someone who has battled as this author has. Kudos to him for not being shy about putting his story out there and for showing others who are suffering that they are not alone.

The ENCORE - The ENCORE has a few short stories written by the author at the end of the book. If you are bothered by horror or dark humor, don't read them. They are warped as hell but beyond entertaining.
This isn't a "rah rah -- feel better now!" kind of book about depression. This is the author's account of his own depression, from his childhood to the present. If you weren't familiar with depression, you might be surprised at the tone of the book because it is quite funny. The author is a good writer and tells his story with extreme honesty and humor.

I definitely agree with him about medical professionals. They are useless bloodsuckers. I think they all just have a one of those flow diagrams, They ask a question, if you say a certain thing, they follow the line to the next box and ask you that question, and so on and so on. Do any of them "care"? I have no idea.

The author says this isn't a self-help book, but just his story of how he deals with depression. From what I could tell, his way of dealing with it is to handle it himself. He still has it, but his writing has allowed him to distract himself from feeling so horrible so much of the time. This is what works for him. I think he has it right. There are times you can distract yourself from feeling crappy (or just feeling at all), but when it comes back it can be so much worse.

The one phrase he used in the book that I disagree with was, "You are not alone." I don't know if he added that because he believes it or because that's what you're supposed to write in a book about depression. Being cynical, I believe the latter, but I don't know what is in his head. I know he describes being alone a lot of the time--and wanting to be alone because it is just too difficult to pretend sometimes. I think most people with depression would say they are alone and they believe it. Whether it is true or not, who knows? Depression can skew perception, but I can say from personal experience, depression means you are alone.

Does depression lead to being alone or does being alone lead to depression? Who knows? The author doesn't claim to know. Neither do I.

If you read this book, you may be able to see where some of the author's writing comes from. He uses his pain to write and that pain is pretty evident is his books. If using the pain to become a successful writer is one way to alleviate depression, then this author has succeeded, but even he admits that it still comes back. Unfortunately, it's always there. It just hides sometimes.
